Fortune Favors The Bold

Human history has a tendency to favor, honor and respect the courageous & brave. Perhaps, both in ancient and recent history, we have seen the practical illustration of the common notion 'fortune favors the bold' whether it be Raja Paurava (King Porus) or the miserable Afghans.

While scrolling through the pages of history we came across many instances where nations stood their ground whenever they were challenged upon by the invading imperialists of the time.

On November 30, 1939, right after the second world war has been kicked off by the Soviet Russia in Poland, the mighty Red Army which was almost more than 30 times stronger, larger and widespread than the Finnish Army on both Land & Air, invaded the Finland.

History of mankind remembers it with the name of 'Winter War'. It is considered as the fiercest wars in the history of Northern Europe, where on one hand was the mighty 'Super Power' and on the other hand an agrarian struggling economy which had nothing to lose but its 'Sovereignty' or 'Ghairat' as they say. The war lasted for 3.5 months and a cease fire was called upon by both sides on March 13, 1940 with a sheer international embarrassment for Soviets. No one expected the Finnish to resist the Soviet 'bear' and gave them a tough time in the highlands during the winters. Russians expected to have it as a 'piece of cake' but a 'Baa Gherat' Nation proved to the world that its not the size, economy or numbers that matters.

'Winter War' was than followed upon by the war of Lapland, Continuation War, Offensive from Britain and time again 'Piss Taking' from the Red Army. Finland, during all those times, was never expected to withstand all these offensives, at least on paper but they always proved the odds wrong and proved the God helped those who helped themselves. During the war they were largely dependent upon the food, fuel and armament shipments from Germany and in some instances Sweden. It was the only democracy to have supported the Nazi Germany, the holder of only three capitals the Allied or Germans could not capture in the mainland Europe with the remaining two as Moscow and London, the only country to have been bordering the Soviet Union and remained independent, and the only country in the western Europe to reject the US aid through 'Marshall Plan'.

It may sound astonishingly absurd at first to saw any comparison between the strongest economy of present world and the weakest, in-fact, a failed nation(as believed by our 'Front line Allies').

What is to note what Finland was not than, what Pakistan is now. Finland's economy was only minute, they were a nation living under the Ice Blanket and geographical locations preventing any harvesting or cultivation, there food culture mainly revolved around the marine cuisine, they were facing potentially three nuclear powers at the same time and were fighting them, technologically, economically, politically, militarily they were all too low to survive but when it actually came to the 'Sovereignty' of the nation, the 'Ghairat' of the nation, the 'Interest' of the nation, they stood up to the mightiest powers of the world and managed to defeat them.

Surely, recent military history of Finland holds for us Pakistanis a great message, that its not the size that matters but in all actualities its the commitment to standing-up for your Sovereignty that matters. A feat that we inherited from our ancestors.

I have intentionally splashed this load of information on the wall of media to let my 'Liberal Fascist' friends knew, that its not only the feat of Muslims to have fought against the much more stronger and mightier enemy but a human instinct that when you stand up for yourself and decide to take the enemy heads on, the heavens turn their favor on your side, the odds start to favor you and its your commitment that takes you to the heights of sky.

Our one media anchor a College Professor like figure who has been an advocate of US and their policies in the region and always try to intoxicate the hearts and minds of the masses that US is a power of formidable strength and the best in our interest is to adhere to whatever it may ask us to do, should come and have a look that how the Finnish survived the offenses from all around but never bowed.

Having a shiny bald head, a pair of glasses and a Gucci suit is not a guarantee enough for you, let alone anyone else, to be the maestro of every trade. For sure, time has been the witness and it has seen the more rises and falls than anyone else ever, and the lesson of the time is to 'Stand-Up' before someone else is standing on your head.. .. ..
